Looks like chaos? Looks big and scary? Learn to spot what’s going on out there. How big are the waves? Which ones are good for surfing?
Many people who swim never do it in rough water. You will learn simple techniques to keep you safe and enjoy the energy of the ocean.
Starting on the beach, you’ll learn how to lie on a surfboard and paddle it. Then, with close instruction, you’ll start catching waves in no time.
"It’s like walking on water!" said one student. Standing up on a board while it’s sliding down a wave is a feeling like no other...
Surfing is a ton of fun but to keep it that way, we need to know safety and rules of the road - stuff that’s easy to learn and keeps everyone smiling.
Surfing is famously laid back but for everyone's safety there are some simple rules of the road. Don't worry, they're easy.
Surfers always want to know more about waves. Don't worry, we'll clue you in so you can do your own forecasting and know when they're coming.
Surfing might change your life! Seriously, some of our students have so much fun that they keep surfing forever. As we say in the BVI, "Fun for days!"
Steve has been a professional Surf Life Saving lifeguard for 14 years and a surfer for over 20. All his years working on the beaches of the world have taught him two important things – one, that surf conditions become safer the more knowledge a person has about the wave environment, and two, that learning to surf has the power to transform people’s lives. Steve is known locally as one of the BVI’s best, most stylish surfers. When it comes to teaching, he just can’t help passing on his stoke.
Icah is a professional surfer from Jamaica. He has won countless Jamaican national titles and represented his country many times over a surfing career that began in childhood as part of Jamaica’s first surfing family. In between teaching surfing and playing music, he competes and represents his sponsors around the Caribbean and the US East Coast, as well as making film and photo trips around the world. Amongst all of this, Icah has an uncanny knack for helping people stand up on a surfboard and smile all the way to the shore and beyond.
Alex is a BVI-born surfer of over 30 years. Learning to surf in the BVI literally changed his life. After working as a journalist for international and regional news organizations, Alex spent 17 years working as Founding Editor of the acclaimed international surf travel magazine, The Surfer’s Path. The magazine’s work took him all over the surfing world and one of the many lessons learned along the way is that there’s probably no where better to learn to surf than in the BVI. He sees surfing as similar to a martial art. "Thirty years in and I’m still learning."
For over 12 years, little Jackie has been safely guarding and protecting our pristine coastline. If you ever see her on a wave, give way, she's a true local. Jackie is one of several types of marine turtle that inhabit BVI waters. She feeds on coral, seaweeds, jellyfish, and small fish. Other ocean locals include whales, dolphins, reef sharks, stingrays, barracuda, jacks, bonito and a huge range of important sea creatures that pose no danger but demand our respect. Everything is part of the chain of life here and we believe in protecting it and enjoying it. Photo by Clark Little.

Josiah's bay is absolutely spectacular. It is one of my favorite places on earth. Steve really cares about teaching how to be safe. He also is very knowledgable about the fundamentals of surfing. Icah is a professional surfer and also a great guy. I would encourage both kids and adults to have a surf lesson at surf school BVI. If you travel to Tortola and miss Josiah's Bay, you have missed an incredible gem and have not done your trip justice. I will go back as many times as I can..."
If you're going to try a surf lesson ... Surf School BVI Josiah's Bay is the best place in the world - Steve and his team were loads of fun and really experienced in giving surf lessons .. so it wasn't long before I was standing up on my first wave!!"
Students receive excellent personal service and they progress fast. I have been surfing for 34 years and know skilled instructors when I see them..."
Icah was fantastic! I had so much fun! And I got to my feet! I rode a wave all the way to the beach"
Amazing experience, fabulous instruction and incredible people. Would recommend this experience to all those who want a great day out on the water at one of the most beautiful beaches I have spent time at. Thanks, Steve and Icah...
